Communication:

There are lots of areas of communication that I work upon including:

  • Cognitive Communication Disorder
  • Understanding of Language
  • Early language development
  • Using words and putting words together in sentences
  • Supporting Social and Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
  • Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)
  • Speech sounds (phonological and articulation) including dysarthria and dyspraxia
  • Grammar in spoken language
  • Developing vocabulary
  • Higher level understanding of language such as figurative language and inference making-the bits of conversation that are unspoken and make it tricky to navigate, impacting upon everyday functioning, social interaction and academic performance
  • Identifying the meaning and triggers behind behaviours of distress (previously known as challenging behaviours) and supporting understanding and communication around these.
  • Conversational skills-many of my clients who have experienced a TBI have specific areas of conversation that they would like to work upon.
  • Auditory memory and processing (listening to, interpreting and recalling spoken language)
  • Social communication
  • Phonological awareness (early fundamental skills for literacy development)
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and a total communication approach.
  • Functional communication -building this to develop independence and control.
  • Capacity building and assessment-supporting a client to build an understanding of a decision to be made and then supporting them to communicate their feelings and wishes around this decision
